A tribute to Anne McNicholas
17.04.41 - 23.02.24
We pay tribute to Anne McNicholas who passed away on 23rd February peacefully, surrounded by her family.
Anne was an ambassador, cherished friend, and exceptional volunteer nurse for Project Harar. She was often referred to as the ‘Mother of Project Harar’. Her incredible work and impact will be sorely missed by all the countless people she met and interacted with during her years of service.
She always went above and beyond in everything she did. Anne was fiercely adventurous and good fun. She graduated as a nurse in 1962 and went on to visit Ethiopia many times over more than three decades, including eight times with Project Harar. She volunteered as a nurse in many countries, she always said Ethiopia was one of her favourites. Anne believed in sharing skills and worked closely with nurses in Ethiopia. She also would encourage education for children and sowed the seeds for desiring an education.
During our Complex Programmes she would be the first to arrive staying for weeks at a time, preparing the pre-and-post-op facilities, and making sure there were enough blankets, and nutritious food for everybody, always procuring extra oranges and eggs. Anne also believed in holistic care; she bought donkeys for the Cheshire Home and established a Donkey Shelter. These continue to help the children who stay there for rehabilitation. Anne dedicated her time to personally help those whom the charity could not reach, never leaving someone without the help they needed.
She had a wealth of knowledge, strength of spirit and had a knack of getting things done. She was never without a clipboard and always ensured that women and children in our care felt safe.
Anne will be remembered with love and admiration.
