Getting to know Bravescar
We talk to our new media ambassador, Justyn Hollett, award winning film maker and vlogger. Online Justyn goes by the name of Bravescar and is a champion of body positivity and mental health awareness. As a young child Justyn was severely burnt by boiling water and has dedicated a huge part of his life to raising awareness about severe burns, living with scars, being open about past traumas and finding positivity and happiness.
What do you think is the most important thing you have learnt about accepting your scars and being brave?
“My story is my power. I have met so many incredible people and been apart of the most personal gratifying and life- affirming experiences by owning the power of my story and and sharing it.”
What would you say to someone who is struggling with their mental wellbeing and body image as a result of a trauma incident?
“Each day is different. Even each moment. What helps me is remembering what you've overcome and how awesome you actually are. No- one in the entire world has the power of what you have. Change is real and is yours to create every single day. Find that makes you smile, even in the smallest moments. Your body is a just vessel and a symbol of your bravery. Challenge your mind and speak words of positivity over your life.”
Why is it important to never judge someone because of the way they look?
“Our outside exterior are never a true reflection to what is going on inside. We live in a very visual world and we often take what we see as fact. I always aim to look beyond surface level and keep the door open for honest and true communication. Self is the most important place to start with when looking to be kind to others. You first have to be kind to yourself and be honest with what's going on with you. Kindness is free to give, but priceless to receive. A moment of kindness can honestly change someone whole life. To be that person that made someone life special is an incredible 'free' feeling.”
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice what would it be?
“Everything is going to be OK. You already have such amazing people in your life and will attract even more phenomenal people around you. Take time to love yourself and understand yourself. Rejection is not final, it is a sign of opportunity. Be You, Be True and always keep creating.”
