EYOSIAS’S STORY

Eyosias, a brave child with cleft lip and palate, journeyed to Asela Referral and Teaching Hospital for much-needed treatment. Born in the Oromia Region, Eyosias is now one year and six months old, and he is the third child in his family. Despite having no family history of cleft lip and palate, Eyosias faced this challenge, experiencing both the social and health barriers that come with having an untreated cleft condition.

His father, Feyisa, mother, Fireyot, and grandparents accompanied him on the long
journey to Asela Hospital. Upon arrival, Eyosias underwent a blood test to expedite his treatment. He was able to receive the necessary surgery to correct his cleft lip.

Fireyot shared her experience of people in the community commenting and questioning her son’s condition. Receiving cleft surgery is of utmost importance for children in Ethiopia, as it not only improves their overall health and well-being but also positively impacts their social lives by alleviating stigmatisation and allowing them to fully participate in their communities.

The family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Project Harar Ethiopia for providing them with treatment and wished for the organisation’s continued service to those affected by cleft lip and palate. Mr. Feyisa specifically extended his thanks for the services rendered, recognising the value in helping others facing similar challenges.
